Overview of Digital Equity:

Digital inequity continues to perpetuate intergenerational poverty among poor communities of color and its intersectionality arguably makes this issue a forgotten social determinant of health. Digital inequity disenfranchises poor communities of color, limits their access to health care and education and stifles their avenues toward economic opportunity and growth. Digital redlining determines whether or not millions of people can search and apply for jobs and even participate in our democracy. Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities bear the brunt of these inequalities. Black and Latino students are 30% to 40% more likely to have limited access to the internet while 68% of Americans living on rural tribal lands don’t have access to broadband

The Michelson 20MM Digital Equity Initiative seeks to improve access to devices, broadband connectivity, and digital literacy resources for California’s students by surfacing technological innovations that can improve the availability and affordability of internet access, advancing public policies which are recognizing connectivity as a 21st century digital right, and augmenting existing cross-sector collaboration across public, philanthropic, and technology stakeholders.

Position Summary:

The Digital Equity Program Manager will report to the CEO, COO, and Programs Director and will be responsible for managing and supporting the foundation’s long term commitment to the Digital Equity Initiative. The role will require strong research capabilities, strategic planning skills, and cross-sector coordination with a range of stakeholders to grow the foundation’s smart justice network. The Program Manager is also responsible for developing annual SMART goals and providing recommendations for the advancement of programmatic goals.

The Digital Equity Program Manager will be responsible for overseeing the below. While these are core duties for the role, the Digital Equity Program Manager is not limited to performing what is captured here; we think growth is good. You should too!

Lead the Digital Equity Initiative, which includes providing technical, programmatic, and administrative support for ongoing Digital Equity activities. This includes:

Leading the strategy development and refinement;
Development of programmatic materials with the support of the Marketing & Communications Manager, such as fact sheets, brochures one-pagers, etc;
Monitoring and evaluation of activities, this includes developing milestone-based performance objectives;
Managing relationships with key stakeholders;
Managing the foundation’s digital equity learning series: “Connecting California: Solving the Digital Divide” which brings together the public, private and philanthropic sectors to strengthen collective understanding of the history and root causes of the “digital divides” and provides a forum that speaks to different facets of the complex landscape for building digital equity solutions at national, state and local levels
Managing and growing the foundation’s “Digital Equity Network”, a dedicated space on LinkedIn to foster collaboration amongst California’s philanthropic community to advance digital equity and close the divide––faster, and together
Support the management of current and future Digital Equity grantees. This includes:

Reviewing and evaluating letters of inquiry;
Providing written analysis and funding recommendations;
Drafting of grant agreements;
Establishing and sustaining partnerships with grantees through regular check-ins and other communications;
Managing grantee reporting;
Guide the Foundation’s Digital Equity policy efforts. This includes:

Communicating with public officials to educate and inform them on pertinent topics with which the Foundation is familiar;
Educating the public on the impact of current laws and policies;
Engaging stakeholder organizations to help educate and inform others about public policy issues;
Preparing model legislation;
Performing research on public policy issues related to the Foundation’s mission;
Staying informed of developments and emerging trends in the criminal justice reform and postsecondary education sectors;
Reviewing and synthesizing research to inform grantmaking activities and internal initiatives;
Managing internal program processes and ensuring appropriate documentation, budgeting, and reporting to support operational efficiency and effectiveness;
Undertaking additional projects and assignments as requested by Foundation leadership.

A college degree in a related field (BA, BS) or equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
A minimum of 5 years experience with administration, program management, and/or grants management and familiarity with items related to digital equity and current stakeholders
Understanding of how policy is shaped across systems, this includes state, federal, and local
Excellent written and verbal communication skillsa nd is able to work well with multiple constituencies and audiences, including academics, policymakers, researchers, advocates, educators, the public at large, and a range of media outlets.
A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
Strong project management skills and follow through
Ability to take ownership of new projects and work well with ambiguity
Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”
Sincere commitment to working collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, advocates, partners, program participants, and other supporters
Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
Must be willing to travel occasionally upon being deemed feasible relating to COVID
Analytical skills, and leadership capabilities and is a team player
Knowledge of grant management and the nonprofit sector is preferred, a strong interest in the education sector and social impact work is required.
