Empowering Communities Through Narrative: Inside NDIA’s New Storytelling Brief

Digital inclusion programs lead the critical effort to ensure all communities have opportunities afforded by expanded broadband access, digital skills training, and affordable devices. However, these programs frequently face funding challenges and shifting political priorities. Sustainable programs require ongoing, resilient support. Storytelling bridges the gap between abstract technical work and the emotional resonance required to inspire long-term investment.

While the data and metrics these programs often rely on are crucial, they only tell part of the story. Behind every statistic is a human being whose life has been fundamentally changed by digital access. Impactful storytelling is a powerful sustainability strategy that helps communities, partners, and elected officials grasp the human and societal value of digital equity. By transforming data and outcomes into compelling narratives, storytelling can make the invisible visible, bringing to life the people, communities, and possibilities behind digital inclusion efforts. To sustain digital inclusion initiatives—to secure funding, build partnerships, and foster community trust—we must be able to communicate these human impacts effectively.

That is why NDIA is thrilled to announce the launch of our newest brief: Impactful Storytelling as a Sustainability Strategy for Digital Inclusion.

This guide is designed to help digital inclusion organizations and programs harness the power of narrative while centering the dignity and agency of the communities they serve.

Stories have the power to shape reality. By adopting ethical and equitable storytelling practices, we can build a more sustainable, just, and fully connected future. We invite you to explore the brief, share it with those who could benefit, and use it to elevate the voices of those navigating the digital divide:
